I apologize in advance for how abrasive I may come off as. But I've been getting more and more frustrated at a particular issue as the days go on. I don't think I even need to provide any background information on the subject because it seems like EVERY sports outlet is taking about it. Even the regular news stations. I am of course talking about the pregame kneeling that has apparently become very popular among the NFL teams.
Now, I'm not normally a fan of pro sports. It's not that I think they suck. I just find that there's a lot more energy and excitement in college sports. A perfect example of this would be the Red River Shootout. But I've started to pay attention to the NFL more simply because my dad is a Cowboys fan and I like seeing how the horns do after college *cough*donteforeman*cough*. I've even toyed around with the idea of learning about the players more so I could try my hand at fantasy football sometime. Or at least, I USED to. UNTIL PLAYERS STARTED KNEELING.
It's not even about kneeling during the national anthem. Not entirely, anyway. That's not my main grievance. My main issue is that it's happening at a fucking football game! They're bringing politics in SPORTS!! Do people not see how that can go wrong at all?? They don't mix!
I think I can speak for a lot of sports fans- maybe, maybe not the majority. But at least a lot of them- when I say that I see sports as an escape of sorts. Nowadays, we get so much political garbage thrown at us. "Trump this, Hillary that, Bernie this other thing, racism sexism bigotry protests, yada yada yada." No matter what your political leaning is, it does get grating after a while. And that's why you need an escape. To get your mind off of the stresses of real life, at least for a bit. And for a lot of us, it's sports. However, for some of us, that escape is now in danger, because, and I don't know how the hell this even happened, but the stresses of real life are now infiltrating our escape. For some of us, it's an even bigger issue because some people exclusively watch NFL or pro sports in general. My last hope in particular were the cowboys, where I remember Jerry Jones saying that he'd fire anyone who knelt at the national anthem. And then today happened. I have no more hope for the NFL.
And it pisses me off even more that somehow, we're the bad guys for not wanting to see it at a football game! Even as I was typing this on my phone in a restaurant, I overheard the host for sportscenter saying that since the cowboys were booed while they knelt and it wasn't even during the anthem, he doesn't know what more could satisfy us. Um, DON'T DO IT AT ALL. Is it really that hard to think of that people don't want to see this at a sports game? Possibly the most unrelated thing to the issue you're "protesting"?? Are you fucking kidding me?!
Do they have the right to do so? Absolutely. But I also have the right to switch off of channels showing NFL games until this shit stops. I do not want politics mixing into one of my escapes. And judging by all of the booing in the Cowboys Cardinals game, I'm not alone in that opinion.
